this is nbc 10 news first alert weather. >> right now an "nbc 10 news today," wintry weather. we have live team coverage this morning as we track snow in our region. >> an icy commute. here's a live look at route 13 near state road in dover, delaware. we just got an update from deldot. they remind drivers that highway ramps and bridges could be slippy with the temperatures dropping. a live report from delaware in just a few minutes. welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> and i'm vai sikahema. watch the bottom of your screen for school delays and cancellations. at last check, eight so far. that continues to change. continue to look for that.
we've issued a first alert for this morning's icy commute and flooding threat along the jersey shore. high tide is between 7:30 and 8:30 this morning. let's get our start with meteorologist bill henley and the first alert forecast. >> light showers overnight in some areas, just enough for a dusting on grassy surfaces and temperatures since then have been falling. you may run into icy spots to begin with. periods of snow developing in delaware and south jersey will be spreading through the day today into pennsylvania. you mentioned the coastal flooding, that threat again today in delaware and south jersey, even delaware river. we've already seen flooding this morning. as far as the wet weather is concerned, we're waiting for it in philadelphia. so the south, you can see it is a mix of snow and rain that's moved into central delaware. sme smyrna seeing light snow flakes. a mix in cape may county, cape
scattered light showers in the atlantic city area. the temperatures right at the freezing mark for northeast philadelphia, philadelphia and wilmington. some slipping and sliding has been reported in delaware and you will likely find that on untreated areas north and west from the light precipitation that happened overnight. still waiting for a little bit of snow in south philadelphia. but it will be coming. light, scattered snow showers at 7:00. 32 degrees. the temperatures will be warming. this is going to make one of those events where the snow is coulding down but it's melting during the day. 38 degrees at 1:00. we'll be tracking snow into the afternoon hours. it may impact the evening commute as well. but we still have the morning to get through. jessica boyington is watching your first alert traffic. >> right, bill. we've on the vine street expressway right now. all open through center city. this is around third street. no problems in either direction, no backups and roadways still looking particularly dry. we do have a bridge closure,
falls bridge is closed for rehabilitation work. that will be out there until april. your alternate is to take the city avenue bridge. hazardous road conditions in upper hanover, knight road and markley road. speed restrictions on the rest of the bridges, the commodore barry, the ben and the betsy down to 35 miles an hour. the walt is nice and clear heading into philadelphia. nbc 10's katy zachry is live in stormforce 10. she's been to horsham, doylestown, quakertown, now near allentown. katy, how are the roads there? >> tracy, take a look. we just got off of 78 through allentown. we are right now on lehigh street. we noticed more moisture as we made our way from quakertown to allentown, light rain coming down on our wind shield. that's dissipated right now. we've seen message boards on 78 and 309 alerting drivers to the
winter weather and that conditions could be hazardous for travel. penndot has fanned out, especially in southeastern pennsylvania, in that corner, has fanned out trucks and plows throughout the area. septa seems to be on track, no service alerts or interruptions at this point. just advisingtñ@ travelers to b cautious as they get on and off of trains, trolleys and buses. we'll check in with police up here in allentown, find out if they've gone out on any calls because of icy conditions. then we'll make our way back down south toward the philadelphia area along 476, the northeast extension south, just to see what the conditions are there as we move closer into the bulk of the morning rush. we're live in allentown, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. >> thank you and stay safe out there. heading to new castleç couy where they could see as much as 3 inches of snow over the next 24 hours. matt delucia is live in newark
where there seems to be a few flurries out there right now, matt? >> just a few flurries. haven't seen any accumulation on the roads. we have a little bit of accumulation in the form of dusting on some of the parking meters and trash cans, grassy surfaces in this area. we're on east main street. wet roads, you can see a little bit of sunshine off the asphalt. a lot of the deldot crews have been on the roadways spreading some of that brine solution, especially on the major roads and highways. we just did get an update from deldot a few minutes ago. they tell us, because a lot of the precipitation has been rain overnight, it's left wet or slushy roads in many areas. because that snow is still in the forecast for later in the day with some accumulations up to 4 inches we've been hearing from bill henley, deldot's crews are monitoring the roads right now and continuing to treat surfaces that could become icy. at this point, we're keeping an eye on the conditions out here right now.
at this point, again, we've only seen a couple slick spots on some of the side streets, bridges and overpasses. you have to be aware of that as you head out the door this morning. you might also need that snow brush. we've seen cars out there with snow on the windshields and windows. brush that off before you head out the door this morning. overall, not too bad. we're still waiting for the big stuff to come later on. live in newark, delaware, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. we'll keep you updated all day long with the nbc 10 app. find the nbc 10 first alert forecast, what's happening in your neighborhood, also you'll be able to track with this live weather radar. it's 5:37 and 31 degrees in philadelphia. today a school board in montgomery county will meet for the first time since a series of fights involving students. tonight's abington school board meeting is expected to cover what happened in these videos. the images were posted onlien an they show high school kids brawling and they use the hash tag abington fight week when they posted these videos. the school superintendent
notified parents at the district and police are tightening security and investigating. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 5:38. the temperatures have hit the freezing mark or just below in much of the area. for now, the radar screen in philadelphia is clear, completely dry, though. we did see a few light showers overnight and here we go, snow and rain mix in delaware. this is what matt delucias with talking about, making for slushy conditions in the area. the temperatures are above freezing in dover. just barely at 34 degrees. it's a rain/snow mix in portions of cumberland and cape may county. it's trying to make its way into atlantic city. you can see most of this precipitation is staying to the south and through much of the morning it is beginning to beç staying to the south. but eventually it will be pushing into pennsylvania. that's going to happen late this morning and this afternoon. in fact, more likely you'll see periods of snow as we go into the afternoon. here's what you can expect. hour by hour in montgomery and
bucks county, 9:15 this morning, temperatures are climbing but it's still cold enough for snow. at that hour, this computer model show be it is completely dry. as we go into the noontime hour, closer to 1:00 in the afternoon, you can see light snow in upper montgomery county starting to develop. 33 degrees in limerick and it's cold enough for some surfaces, mainly grassy surfaces to see accumulation. doylestown could see additional accumulation. that's at 4:45 this afternoon, heading into the evening commute. this is one you'll see more widespread snowfall heading into the late afternoon and evening hours. by evening it starts to taper off. the temperatures will be coming down. so we'll see slippery conditions developing tonight after a slippier morning. in between the temperatures will climb into the middle 30s for reading and allentown, not a lot above freezing. enough to limit accumulation on some of the harder surfaces, though. the major roads should be wet this afternoon. doylestown, 34, 39 in mt. holly,
occasional snow this afternoon. a mix of rain and snow this morning for cape may, vineland and dover, upper 30s. not a lot warmer than it is right new. low 40s for swedesboro, near 40 degrees for philadelphia, drexel hill and wilmington. with snow developing that will likely melt, much of it will melt as it's coming down. may not be a lot of shoveling to do by the time this one is done. i'll go through the seven-day forecast which has a major change for the weekend when i come back in ten minutes. 20 minutes before 6:00. be very careful out there, icy roads as we've been discussing throughout the morning as you head out to work or school. >> jessica boyington has been monitoring the road conditions what are you seeing now, jessica? >> good news and an update for you. we had different reports of flooding out in new jersey this morning. that flooding has cleared. we had one earlier with all lanes closed at the brooklawn circle and another one in logan township on route 130 around 322. that had one lane closed but now
we're back in business. route 55 over in millville, new jersey around route 49, no problems in either direction. not a lot of cars in the area as well. here's the blue route, we're still in the green, speeds are still up there. we have a 16-minute trip headed southbound from the schuylkill to 95. average speeds whether you're headed northbound or southbound are still in the 60s. we're okay. as for mass transit, no weather related delays this morning. for septa, we have the thorndale paoli train 9569 from center city to thorndale canceled because of mechanical issues. it's a nightmare at sea for thousands of cruise passengers. just ahead, we'll update you on the royal caribbean cruise that got hammered by a storm. and we'll give you the details involving lesean mccoy and several philadelphia police officers.

use caution getting to their bus stops because of the slippier conditions and minor delays are a possibility. flooding is a big concern today at the jersey shore. high tide will be between 7:30 and 8:30. >> we have a handful of schools closed or delayed today. now is a good time to sign up for the nbc 10 school closing alerts. we can send on e-mail or text when your child's school is closed. we're already getting election returns from the new hampshire primary. >> voters are selecting their nominees for president. the town of dixville notch, population 9. they continue their tradition after voting at the stroke of midnight on primary day. john kasich topped the republican vote 3-2 over donald trump. bernie sanders swept the democratic ballots. the new jersey governor chris christie wrapped up campaigning last night by mocking undecided voters. >> tick tock, tick tock, tick
tock, right? going to have to decide soon. >> christie also stressed the importance of electing a republican president. the former president accused sanders supporters of playing dirty. >> they are literally too profane often, not to mention sexist. >> clinton also said he has to be careful about what he says. meanwhile, sanders stayed on message yesterday. >> and what people will be asking is not just who wins but whether the people of new hampshire are prepared to lead this country in a political revolution. >> sanders said he doesn't need any support from people who use sexist attacks on candidates. nbc 10's george spencer is in new hampshire, doing a great job by the way. watch his live reports on the new hampshire primary today and tomorrow right here on nbc 10
news. and here's a live look at the wells fargo center in south philadelphia, all lit up. the arena will host the democratic national convention this summer, in july. and now you can decide how you'd like to help. yesterday, the host committee launched an official volunteer registration portal which allows you to sign up for specific jobs at the convention. fo)ha link to the portal, just download the nbc 10 app or go to our website at nbc10.com. we are still waiting to learn the identity of the man killed in a police-involved shooting in delaware county. nbc 10 was the first to report the breaking news to you yesterday morning. and we are still trying to gather details this morning. no official word yet from police as to how this unfolded. here's what we do know. the incident started with a high-speed chase in darby borough and ended on keystone road in chester. the shooting left one man dead and his cousin wounded. police are not said how many
shots were fired or if there was an exchange of gunfire. a royal caribbean cruise ship is returning to north jersey after slamming into a powerful storm in the atlantic city. this video was taken by passengers on board. the cruise started saturday in bayon bayonne, new jersey. the ship encountered 30-foot seas with winds matching a category 2 hurricane. >> my dad says, you know, this ship could crack in half. >> no injuries are reported and the damage is said to be minor. the ship is scheduled to return to cape liberty in bayonne tomorrow. they are promising new refunds to passenger. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 5:48. we've seen scattered showers overnight. so a lot of the roads have been dampened. now the temperatures are coming down. the majors have been treated. it's the side streets you can find slippery spots this
morning. 32 degrees and holding in philadelphia. wind is blowing out of the east/northeast at 10 miles an hour and flooding is still a big concern this morning at the shore. rain is coming down in cape may right now. that's a live view from the marquis de lafayette hotel. 30 degrees in wilmington, 32 in philadelphia. camden county, just below freezing in pennsauken, audubon and haddonfield. watch out for icing this morning. here comes more wet weather. for now it's staying to the south. you can see it in delaware and into south jersey. it's a mix of rain and snow in the dover area. temperatures are just above freezing. that's what we'll see for much of the day. the temperatures will be rising. so much of the day it may be snowing at times but accumulation is going to be very limited with the warmer temperatures. it will be melting for much of the day as it comes down. it looks impressive on the radar. it's really very light. as far as flooding, that's a big
threat against the day. possibly higher tides for coastal new jersey, coastal warning in effect for 1:00 in new jersey and delaware. a flood advisory in effect for the delaware river. jessica was reporting on floodingç first thing this morning. south jersey, scattered snow showers in salem and cumberland county. that's at 9:00. look at the temperatures above freezing. warming up to 40 degrees in salem county. that's at noontime. snow could be coming down. again, it will be melting or limited to colder surfaces that already have snow on them like grass. this morning, we'll see temperatures climbing by afternoon. that snow at 3:00, 38 degrees in the cherry hill area, by 6:00 this evening, during the evening commute, this system starts to fall apart for us. by then, up to an inch in south jersey, 1 to 3 inches in philadelphia. we're still look at an area to the west that could see some higher totals by the time this one is done tomorrow morning.
the map covers all of what's coming our way for today. periods of snow, won't be an all-day snowfall. temperatures into the low 40s this afternoon. we'll be drying out tomorrow and then here comes the cold. a blast of arctic cold on thursday, 29 degrees. it gets much colder friday morning. but at night it is frigid this weekend, 12 degrees, in the teens saturday and sunday afternoon. valentine's day. maybe one of the coldest ever for our area. 3 degrees sunday morning, 19 in the afternoon. we could see showers but it may be a mix late on monday. with warmer temperatures finally moving in on monday. we look forward to monday for a change. >> okay. >> high tide which is an hour and a half, two hours from now is problematic. >> 7:30 to 8:30 at the jersey shore. later in parts of delaware and flooding is likely again, unfortunately. >> we'll keep you posted on all of it.

your pipes to keep them from freezing. both of those tips might not be the best thing to do if you have children in the house. we want to know what you do. are there any short cuts that you found that work for fighting winter weather? tell us on facebook and twitter and we may share them later this week on "nbc 10 news today." now to the latest on the police investigation into former eagle lesean mccoy. sources tell nbc 10 charges will be filed against mccoy and three others for their involvement in a nightclub brawl that sent two off-duty philly police officers to the hospital. the night started over a champagne bottle inside the recess lounge near second and market sunday morning. >> i can't come up with any type of argument, again, over a bottle of champagne that would lead to me wanting to knock someone to the ground, kicking them and beat them in a brutal way. >> mccoy plays for the buffalo bills now. the team released a statement saying they are aware of the reports regarding mccoy and are
in the process of gathering more information. they are not commenting further. president obama is asking congress for more than $1 billion in emergency funding to help fight the zika virus. the money would be used to expand mosquito control programs, speed up development of a vaccine, diagnostic tests as well. the rio olympic committee said they have not seen evidence of people cancelli inling travel p because of zika. the pan-american health organization reports the zika virus is affecting 26 countries ander its in the americas. cdc says there have been 50 confirmed cases of the virus among u.s. travelers in the last two months. coming up, all new at 6:00, we're following breaking news out of germany. >> these images just coming into the nbc 10 newsroom.
